I personally own a copy of this book. It's great and gives step by step clear directions for how to use any feature of
the TI-83 Plus. Almost every example has multple screen shots from the TI-83 Plus.
Statistics
- For many people the advanced statistics capability of the Ti-83 Plus will be the strongest reason to buy it.
If you plan to take a statistics class, you will probably find that this the TI-83 plus is worth the slightly higher price than it would cost to buy a TI-83(regular not plus!). The statistics features of this calculator set it apart from earlier models and, surprisingly enough, later TI's including the TI-86, 89, and 92 ! This model can do a Chi-Square and various descriptive stats, confidence levels, hypothesis testing and probability distributions. You might find yourself wondering when the heck you'd have to do a Chi-Square and the answer is in a "Stats class."
Graphing
-Like majority of the Texas Instruments Calcuators, the TI 83 plus graphs functions allows for polor or regular coordinate graphs,allows you to change the window, the scale of the graph, gives you zoom in and out as well as 'trace' the graph feature and the 83 plus can produce stat graphs like the box and whiskers, histograms, scatter plots as well as regressions.
Additionally, it is possible to save and recall graphs at a later time. A really cool feature that this calculator can do is: given a function like y =2x, you can have the TI-83 plus produce the graph of its inverse function!
Calculus - Unlike the later editions the 89 or 92, this calculator does not do all of the symbolic integration and differentation. The 83 plus can compute derivatives and do integration for
definite integrals..

Linear Algebra - Personally, when I took linear algebra in grad school last year, the linear algebra capabailties were a great reason to buy a TI-83 plus calculator. This calc can multiply matrices as well as add and subtract them. Also, it can produce the inverse of a matrix, produce reduced row echelon form for a matrix and calculate the determinant.(It should be noted that the regular TI-83 has these features--you just press a few different buttons)
Probability - Permutations, combinations, generating random numbers, probability distributions including binomial

Sequences - The 83-plus has many features that support sequences. However, you should know that the the TI-83 plus can work withy only three sequence functions, each function can only work with the prior two terms of that (or another) function. Therefore, the calc can do a Fibonacci sequence of x(n) = x(n-1)+ x(n-2) but that is it. However, the 83 plus lets you graph sequences or multiple sequences, store sequences for later use, and show the values of a sequence in a table
